Alex Walpoth

IFMGA mountain guide

Alex Walpoth, born in 1994, started climbing as a child and was out and about on the big walls of the Dolomites with his friends at an early age. Until his high school years, Alex competed in the Youth European Cup, but his focus soon shifted towards ski touring and mountaineering in all its diverse forms alongside climbing. In his early twenties, Alex achieved several beautiful first ascents and winter climbs in his local mountains.

During his medical studies, he completed his mountain guide training in 2019 and has been working occasionally with the Catores mountain guide team ever since. Alex is currently completing his residency to become an anesthesiologist at the University Hospital in Innsbruck, which he will soon finish. After that, we will likely see him more often again in Val Gardena for guiding and climbing.

Alex’s favorite tours:

Geo (Mëisules dala Biesces), Vinatzer (Pieralongia) and the Villnösser Rotwand

Personal highlights:

  • First ascent of "Guardiano dei sogni" on the Terza Pala di San Lucano
  • Ananda 8b, sport climbing route in Cansla
  • "Oltre il Diau", first ascent on Mount Antelao

Alex’s motto:

The mountain provides the prerequisite to be free. Whether we actually feel free is up to us. It works best when we detach ourselves from the pressure to perform, from comparisons with others and ourselves, from time tracking, and from difficulty scales.

Climb high, feel free.A mountain guiding tradition that moves you: with the passion of the Catores to your goals in the Dolomites.
