The Hintergrat is a magnificent alpine tour to the 3,905m summit of the Ortler. For ambitious mountaineers, crossing 'King Ortler' is one of the absolute great classics of the Eastern Alps. Starting from the Hintergrat Hut, you ascend against the impressive backdrop of the Königsspitze, Zebrù, and Cevedale. The route leads to the highest point in South Tyrol via enjoyable climbing, firn fields, and exposed ridge sections. The subsequent descent via the normal route past the Payer Hut turns the Ortler ascent into a varied round-trip. Day 1: Arrival in Sulden and Hike to the Hut
Meeting in Sulden and ascent to the hut: A pleasant trail from Langenstein to the Hintergrathütte 2,661m in the realm of the bearded vulture.
Elevation change: ↑ 300 m
Duration: approx. 1–1.5 hours
Day 2: Summiting King Ortler
Summit Day: Early departure, depending on the hut's breakfast schedule. Ascent via the Hintergrat to the summit of the Ortler, followed by a descent via the normal route to the Payerhütte. The further descent from the Payerhütte down into the valley takes approximately another 2.5 hours.
