I Droc – Ice climbing in Vallunga

Guided ice climbing tour on the sunny side of Val Gardena – A classic of the Dolomites

The Droc icefall is an absolute classic in Vallunga and far beyond. This challenging, 350-meter-long ice line is hidden in a narrow side valley beneath the Stevia plateau, right at the entrance of the Puez-Geisler Nature Park. The approach leads through a tiered gully, and the true centerpiece of the tour only reveals itself a few meters before the climbing actually begins. Because it is south-facing, this spectacular ice pillar can only be climbed under good conditions. In return, you are rewarded with the rare pleasure of swinging your ice axes in the warm sunshine. After the first steep pitch, the icefall eases up, with short vertical sections alternating with easier lengths.

Since Vallunga is the home turf for our mountain guides at the Catores Alpine School, we know the local conditions inside out and always know which lines currently offer the best ice. Contact us and let’s experience this Dolomite classic together!

Should this icefall not be formed, 'La Piovra' on the north-facing side of the valley offers an excellent alternative.
