The Holzknecht Couloir is an elegant ice line that stretches all the way to the summit of the Langkofeleck. First climbed by our guides Adam and Hubert, this tour counts as one of the truly great ice climbs in the Dolomites. With steep icefalls and goulottes, it offers a challenging experience in the heart of the Langkofel massif.
The approach via the Langkofelscharte is done either on foot or on skis, depending on the snow conditions. Afterwards, you traverse a section across the standard route of the Langkofel and then begin the actual climbing. The second pitch (WI5+) is the most difficult right off the bat and often presents challenging ice conditions. This is followed by several wonderful ice steps until you reach the final snow couloir. After about 500 meters of climbing, you reach the summit of the Langkofeleck (3,081 m) and are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view.
