Pössnecker Via Ferrata - A Classic on the Sella Massif

Ferratra Mesules: A long and historic via ferrata on the Sella in Val Gardena

Built in 1912 and funded by the Pössneck section, this via ferrata is the oldest in Val Gardena and one of the most historic in the entire Dolomites. Over 110 years later, in 2022, it was completely renovated—yet its wild and demanding character remains.

Starting from the Sella Pass, the tour leads directly into the west face of the Ciavazes, which is still in the shade in the morning and demands steep, strenuous climbing graded C and D. By the time you reach the impressive chimney climb inside the mountain, you will be glad to have a local South Tyrolean mountain guide by your side. A second ascent finally leads to the 2,941-meter-high Piz Selva, which opens up a breathtaking view of the Sella massif's high plateau and the Val Gardena. The long descent through the Val Lasties requires good physical conditioning and stable weather, ensuring you can bring this grand day to a tired but happy close.
