The Oskar Schuster via ferrata is one of the most famous and popular routes in Val Gardena. This stunning ascent leads to the summit of Sassopiatto (2,958 m), which forms the western boundary of the Sassolungo group. The climb through the terrain below Sassopiatto and the following moderate via ferrata section combine untouched wilderness with an unforgettable mountain panorama.

We start early in the morning with the legendary cable car up to the Forcella del Sassolungo. From the Rifugio Toni Demetz, the trail descends through the impressive Sassolungo basin down to the Rifugio Vicenza. After a strengthening coffee with Alexander, the hut keeper, we begin the ascent toward the Sassopiatto basin.
Once we reach the start of the route, the climb continues over secured sections with steel cables and short unsecured passages. Your experienced Catores mountain guide is always by your side, offering valuable tips on foot placement and ensuring safety in alpine terrain. Steep sections alternate with parts equipped with iron rungs. The final stretch to the summit of Sassopiatto (2,958 m) is reached through a steep gully. At the top, a magnificent panorama opens over the western Dolomites, from the Sciliar to the Catinaccio.
