At 3,905 m, the Ortler is the highest mountain in South Tyrol and visible from afar. Even from the Dolomite peaks of Val Gardena and the Rosengarten, the massive glacier fields of the Ortler Group tower high above the surrounding massifs. In the heart of this impressive high-alpine landscape rises the Ortler—a mountain where mountaineering history was written.
The ascent via the Normal Route from the Payer Hut is a varied high-altitude tour that includes rock climbing sections up to grade III as well as steep ice flanks. In addition to excellent physical fitness, the tour requires sure-footedness, a good head for heights, and some climbing experience. Under the guidance of an experienced mountain guide, summiting King Ortler becomes an intense and unforgettable alpine experience.

Day 1: Approach to the Hut
Joint ascent via the Langstein and the Tabaretta Hut to the Payer Hut3,029m.

Day 2: Summiting King Ortler
Summit Day: Early departure, depending on the hut's breakfast schedule. Ascent and descent from the Payer Hut: 880 meters of vertical gain/loss, time required: 8–9 hours. The descent from the Payer Hut back down into the valley takes approximately 2.5 hours.
